In 2000 Ross Jay Rankin and Lyn Dee Rankin, along with friends and family, embarked on a new adventure. The plan was to hand make small lots of memorable Syrah, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Over the next three years the wines were perfected before becoming a commercial operation for the 2004 harvest.

Their fruit is sourced from their neighbors in Santa Ynez and the nearby Santa Rita Hills. Their flagship Paradise Mountain Syrah comes from the farthest eastern vineyard in Santa Barbara country and sits right in the middle of a very small microclimate with very large rainfalls (75 inches in 2004). The Mountain has cool nights often with night cloud cover and can raise in temperature to over 100 degrees during the harvest season.

After their early success Imagine Wines now produce an array of varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet, and Zinfandel.

Each wine is made in fermentation bins, hand punched down three times per day, and aged in specially selected French (80%), Hungarian (10%), and American (10%) oak barrels for a minimum of one year. After bottling, all of the reds are kept for approximately one more year before being released to ensure the aromas, bouquet, and flavors are fully integrated.

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised when we happened upon this winery. I am always on the search for unique and different Chardonnays. We have been to the Santa Ynez are twice this year and just noticed this winery on the wine map. I looked it up on the internet before going and liked the selection of wines listed. The Viognier and Chardonnay were very good and different. My husband likes reds and enjoyed the Zin, Cab and Syrah. But what was a standout in the tasting was the winemaker did the pouring. It was wonderful to hear him describe the origin the grapes and how he made the wines. The tasting room was nice along with an art gallery. Definitely would go back.

Imagine has a cute tasting room/art gallery in Santa Ynez. We had our first visit this weekend and were pleasantly surprised that we enjoyed the wines so much! We really only loved the Chardonnay and the Zinfandel, the rest were just okay. An added bonus is the beautiful artwork of the lady on the bottles. They told us the history behind the picture and we agreed, She really seems to be imagining something! We loved talking to one of the owners (the wife), she was patient and knowledgeable answering all sorts of questions and providing lots of history behind Imagine's wine. Thanks Imagine!
