About This Winery
Urban Wine Collective
The Urban Wine Collective, The Workshop, is true to its name, providing wine making and cellar space to more than 20 winemakers. These are small production, high quality wines including the house brand Vigilante which is offered on tap and in Growlers To Go. The comfortable and stylish tasting room is a second story space off the busy South Higuera street in SLO, completely unexpected as a wine room and production facility until you climb the starts to their entrance and see the rest of the facility behind. There is also parking around back.
The room features reclaimed barnboard and country decor, which completely takes you away from the urban setting. Soon they will create an outdoor space as well, and with the events they have now and are planning, it should become a very popular spot, just outside of downtown SLO.
Koryn manages the tasting room and handles multiple groups with ease, explaining their unique model of providing wine made by a selection of their collective winemakers. Their house wines are currently a beautiful Rhone blend and a unique Cab and Tempranillo blend, both were excellent. These will change, as will the featured wines by other winemakers. It is a great combination of winery and wine bar, with wines that are all very limited production and only available in very few locations outside of the tasting room.
Thursday night is Blend night, inviting all musicians to come and jam, there is a DJ on Friday night and live music on Sunday afternoon. Food is provided by Justin Casey, well known for his incredible offerings at Granada, downtown SLO. Stay tuned for announcements of more events, an Urban Wine is in the works with such fun as break-dancers and graffiti artists.
In addition to a wine club that features a variety and always changing selection of great wines, there is a Barrel program inviting the public to make a barrel of wine over the course of a year, then take home the bottles. The resulting price is $18/bottle, not bad for professional guidance and great grapes!↑ Less
