So you want an easy-to-follow recipe for the AMF drink? The AMF drink is popular for several reasons. Many like this strong cocktail because it hides the usual kick that straight alcohol offers but it will mellow you out faster a great bodywork session. Others say the drink gives them a high thanks to the combination of sugar and strong alcohol. No matter what your reasons, you should try the AMF drink at least once in your life. Here is how you make it.
Easy recipe for making the AMF Drink
The four primary spirits are gin, white rum, tequila, and vodka. They are the four powerhouses with high ABV that make this drink so strong. These are the proportions:
- 1.5 cl gin
- 1.5 cl of white rum
- 1.5 cl of Tequila
- 1.5 cl Blue Curacao
- 1.5 cl of vodka
- 2.5 cl of lemon juice
- 3 cl sugar syrup (simple syrup)

Making the Sugar Syrup
Steer clear of sugar substitutes. They will ruin the drink, and they leave a very unpleasant aftertaste. Also, try to steer clear of brown rice malt syrup, barley malt syrup, or agave syrup. They do not generate the desired effect.
You may want to buy simple syrup if you don't feel like investing the time to make it at home.
Otherwise, you can make your own syrup. Put in about 1.5cl of slightly heated water (use your microwave), then add regular white sugar a little bit at a time. Mix it until it dissolves and then add a bit more. You can stop adding sugar when it stops dissolving.
How to Mix the Drink
If you are going to use ice, then put the ice in first and then put in the gin, and then the tequila. Next, add the vodka and the white rum. Do not be afraid to mix it vigorously, you cannot bruise the gin. Add the lemon juice, then Blue Curacao, and finally, add the sugar.
You may add a mixer such as lemonade if you wish, but it is better on its own. Also, if you are going to add ice, then do not add a single cube. Some say that adding ice dilutes the drink, and that may be true if you only add one or two ice cubes on a hot day. However, if you add a few ice cubes, then it keeps the drink cold as a whole, so the ice melts slower. That way, it only dilutes your drink is if you leave your drink out for hours.
Want the High Effect?
Don’t believe the people who say it should be warm. If you drink it above room temperature, it becomes sickly and you will start to rue the taste later that night when you start burping it up.
What you need to do is cool all of the ingredients except for the sugar or sugar syrup. Get them chilly so that you can feel it a little more when it hits the back of your throat.
Once you stir in the sugar/syrup make sure it is fully dissolved and mixed. Again, it should be cool, but do not add ice. Repeat, “Do Not Add Ice.” Do not add mixers. You must take it as is.
Finally, when you drink it, you need to sip, and you need to sip it frequently. Allow it to hit the back of your throat almost like you are taking mouthwash. Then, when you have your next AMF cocktail, you can gulp it as normal while still allowing it to hit the back of your throat. Near the end of your second drink, you will start feeling a form of floaty-happy-light-footed tipsy, which is the “High feeling” people claim they get.
What Happens? Do People Really Get High?
On the contrary, you are experiencing a sugar rush mixed with a tipsy feeling. It is said to be similar to the feeling people get when they mixed strong energy drinks with hard alcohol. That is why the US banned energy drinks and hard liquor from being sold in the same can.
What happens is that the hard alcohol and the lemon juice strips the skin cells at the back of your throat. It makes it easier for dissolved sugar and hard alcohol to reach your bloodstream quickly. The sudden shock to your system, resulting from the alcohol and sugar suddenly entering your blood, is what makes you feel high.
If you want a more pronounced feeling, then use pineapple juice squeezed fresh from a pineapple because its throat-searing qualities are more potent since it contains stronger acids than lemons.
Should You Top Up the Drink?
Once you have all your ingredients, should you drink it as it is, or should you top it up with some sort of lemonade? If you are presented with this drink, then you need to try it on its own at least once. If you enjoy the drink on its own, then feel free to start adding mixers to make it a fuller and more refreshing drink. But, you have to try it in its natural form at least once before you think about what to start adding.
What’s the Big Deal About AMF Cocktails?
Most people have probably realized that the AMF drink is only as strong as it is because it’s mostly made up of hard spirits with very little mixer. For example, you could have 7.5cl of whiskey, 5.5cl of a mixer, and it would be just as strong, if not stronger, than the AMF drink.
The hype exists for the same reason as the hype behind the invisible man cocktail, in that both drinks are strong and yet their strength is masked. The great thing about the AMF cocktail is that it is a little stronger than the invisible man cocktail, and many people claim it tastes better. Others also claim that the AMF cocktail tastes better than a Long Island Iced tea, but opinion is divided.
Feel Free to Experiment
The AMF drink hides its alcohol content rather well, but don’t be afraid to experiment because that is what bartenders are doing all the time. For example, many handheld soda dispensers mix the soda syrup with carbonated water right there in the device. As a result, some bartenders are able to pump out pure soft drink syrup.
Rather than using sugar syrup, some bartenders make excellent AMF cocktails with Coca-Cola syrup or lemonade syrup. Some make their AMF drink with golden syrup, whereas others make it with a water-sugar mix. You should experiment with your AMF drink so as to hone it to your preferred flavor.
