We most of us think of wineries, we picture large estates with vineyards stretching out from a central building that houses the winemaking facilities, a tasting room and perhaps a separate barrel room. Drive the Silverado trail in Napa or route 46 in Paso Robles and you can take in one massive wine estate after another. This is a great way to spend a day when you have the time and a good means of transportation. When you don’t, there are options. The growth of urban wineries is changing how we think about wine tasting.
Urban Wineries
In cities like San Francisco, Santa Barbara and San Diego, wineries are opening in small industrial parks, old storefronts and even in hotel lobbies. In some cases, these are just storefronts for wineries. The actual winemaking still happens in a more traditional winery location. Some of these are fully operational wineries. They bring the grapes into the city, crush them on site and allow the magic of fermentation to take place right in the midst of the bustling metropolis. Our favorite city for urban tasting is Portland, Oregon. There are a number of boutique wineries there that have fully embraced the concept. You can easily spend a weekend there hopping from winery to winery. They also have a great craft distillery scene in the city!
This month we are offering you some ideas for your own urban wine tasting adventures in California. Check out these spots in San Francisco and Santa Barbara. The beauty of urban wine tasting is you can walk between most tasting rooms. A short Uber ride will get you to the more remote spots. You can also walk to great places to eat and even walk back to your hotel. These are great options after a full day of tasting.
