Why should you visit the Hobo Wines tasting room when you are visiting Sonoma wine country?
In 2002, Kenny Likitprakong had decided to stop rambling about the country taking photos. Instead, he decided to try his hand at making wine on the cheap. Like many aspiring winemakers who don’t already have a small fortune, he had no fixed place for a winery. And with no estate vineyard to pull from, he got creative and used whatever grapes were available.
The good news for us is that he enjoyed every second of it. After a couple of years in the wine business as Hobo Wines, he was making 500 barrels this way. The name of his brand is an homage to both his originally homeless state as a winemaker. And also to his heroes, the rambling hoboes of the ‘30’s.
The wine label is no longer homeless. Kenny finally set up shop in a warehouse in Santa Rosa. This is an excellent choice of space since Santa Rosa is the capital of Sonoma County. (His Camp Wine label is even a celebration of Sonoma County, using lesser known vineyards to create his minimally processed wine.) His way seems to be working. He continues to sell and expand his wine selections. There are now Camp, Make Work, Dry Goods, Banyan and Folk Machine in his label. You can find most of the popular varietals here. They make great Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir. You can also find blends and some of the less common varietals like Gewurztraminer.
You can have a tasting and visit the Santa Rosa warehouse of Hobo Wines if you call him and set up an appointment. You can also find his wine in many retail locations and restaurants. You are sure to find the experience as unique and as fun as Kenny’s approach to winemaking.
