Flowers Vineyard and Winery
The Flowers Vineyard and Winery insists it has no tasting room, though it may occasionally allow visitors in the lovingly-preserved ranch home in the middle of the estate. However, the winery is in breathtakingly-beautiful Cazadero. Here, ocean breezes bring in fog while the San Andreas Rift brings up soils of shale and schist and pushes ridges of land up to two miles in the air, making the area both cool and charmingly hilly.
This combination of cool evenings, rocky soils and soaring hills makes the two vineyards that Flowers runs ideal for wine grape growing. The winery has two vineyards, Camp Meeting Ridge and Sea View Ridge, and they have converted both to Biodynamic and organic practices. At the same time that they changed their farming techniques, they moved to native fermentation and partially de-stemming their fruit. They hand-harvest in small batches as well. The result is magnificent, with their Pinot Noirs earning over 90 points in Wine Enthusiast’s lists. Their 2012 Sea View Ridge Pinot Noir is a deep red and full of fruity notes. Their 2011 Camp Meeting Ridge Pinot Noir Block 16 got rave reviews for its complexity of flavor and essential delicacy.
Flowers Winery takes particular pride in its Chardonnay, which it grows mostly from Hyde-Old Wente clonal selections and Dijon clones. They got a whopping 96 points for their 2011 Camp Meeting Ridge Chardonnay from Wine and Spirits magazine, which rhapsodized about how the mellow richness and smoky notes make a flavorful, harmonious wine. The 2011 Moon Select Chardonnay is full of minerality and tastes crisp. Truly, Flowers Vineyard and Winery’s focus on their 2 wines has paid off, and you are invited to taste the success.
The best way to get access to the wine from Flowers Vineyard is to sign up for a regular allocation. You can join their email list on their website. They will send out updates when new allocations of wine are available for purchase. If you love Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from cold climate growing areas, you may want to consider signing up!
