Tobin James Cellars rustic wine tasting stop was once an old stagecoach stop. It offers a one-of-a-kind experience that will surely please your palate as well as the “cowboy” in you.
As you stroll up to the ramshackle two-story structure, you are greeted by an assortment of old western pots and pans, blacksmith equipment, a decrepit wagon wheel, fruit presses, barbed wire, a long wooden church pew, wooden chairs and ancient horse tack
Once inside, you feel like you’re in a saloon from the days of Jessie James (who once hid out at his uncle’s nearby Ponza Ranch). The long, 140-year old Brunswick mahogany bar with brass foot rail serves as the main tasting center with a smaller, though similar hand chiseled back-up bar nearby. A third horseshoe shaped counter, >off to the side, handles the overflow from this often raucous tasting room.
There are tables with pottery, displays of cowboy hats, Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirts, gourmet foods, and glassware, along with large format bottles, for sale. The kids will enjoy the full-size video game consoles or there is always Cisco the dog to keep them happy.
Known for an array of red wines, including ten different Zinfandels, Tobin James Cellars produce 35 other varietals including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Syrah Rose, Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, some Bordeaux blends, and wines from Tempranillo and Primitivo grapes. They also have a late harvest sweet Merlot and a Sparkling wine. A three room guest house is available on the premises for wine club members. For picnicking, there are a few tables out in front under the palm trees.
Really love Tobin James and the James Gang? You can join them for river cruises through the old country. Enjoy the beauty of Southern France along with some amazing wine. Or you can party with the James Gang at one of their annual festivals.
