The roots (literally) of this winery are in Château de Beaucastel, the celebrated winery of Châteauneuf du Pape. The owners there teamed up with, Robert Haas, an experienced importer, and distributor and set out to find a California location similar to the Rhone Valley and follow the centuries-old Châteauneuf du Pape tradition of blending specific varietal wines.

One of the “Far-Out” Paso Robles Wineries, Tablas Creek sits on the side of a hill just off Adelaida Road. Its shale rock walled entry and olive tree drive provide an attractive, rustic entrance to this modern, solar-powered Rhone wine facility. The tiled roof winery has a veranda with tables and chairs looking over the vineyard and the mature oaks across the canyon. The moderate-sized tasting room has six different tasting bars for busy weekends and special events. There are windows looking through to the barrel room and their 1200 gallon French oak

Foudre barrels. Logo clothes, wine books, and wine accessories are for sale.

The property’s elevation averages 1,500 feet, and the shallow, rocky limestone soils are of similar geologic origin as those at Beaucastel. Original cuttings were brought from France and propagated on the property. Grapes grown include Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Counoise for reds, and Roussanne, Viognier, Marsanne, and Grenache Blanc for whites. The grapes are grown organically, like that of Château de Beaucastel, using no herbicides or systemic pesticides. The vineyard received its official organic certification in late 2002.

Each varietal is hand-harvested and fermented separately. The vineyard’s signature wines, Esprit de Beaucastel and Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc are blended for age-ability. Other wines made include dessert wines and Chardonnay.

We attended the Wine and Cheese pairing this weekend and it was fabulous! It has been three years since the last one and we were thrilled to be there. Having recently joined the Vinsider club, it was a great chance to meet people and enjoy the wine, not to mention 19 different cheeses! The Rousanne was great and of course the Esprit de Beaucastel. But winemaker Neil went into his private cellar to be sure some of the pairings were perfect. A great tasting room and great events, what better combination!

I love their wine!!! This was the first wine club I ever joined because it was love at first sip. They make great traditional blends as well as some wonderful single varietals. It was beautiful winery fulled with knowledgeable staff that make some great wine. I would definitely suggest stopping by.

This is a very nice location, with a very welcoming ambiance. This is the center of Rhone variatals in Paso, and they have produced fine examples of these wines. Definitely worth a stop.

Went on the wine tour with the owner's son, he did a great job of presenting an interesting informative tour with lots of questions answered. It really was the best tour I've been on at a winery. The wines were all good. I particularly liked their white Rhone wine blend.

The tasting menu when I went was a little limited due to harvest festival, but I think normally they offer more tastings. There were only about 5-6.

Beautiful area but a bit distant from most of the other areas wineries. Nice tour of the wine cave. The wines were good but not excellent. Great area to have a picnic lunch and very friendly staff.
