Airplanes, runways and Zinfandel don’t always mix, but here on the border of the Dry Creek and Alexander Valley Appellations you can have your wine and watch the airplanes too.

Situated on a small hilltop overlooking the local Healdsburg Municipal Airport is a premium red-wine-producing winery making food-friendly Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blends, Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, and their specialty — Zinfandel. The spacious tasting room opened in 1998 and has a wall of glass windows that look out on a picnic area situated amid lawns and gardens. To the west is a view of the airport runway, with the occasional private plane coming and going. The black granite tasting counter and slate stone floors create an upscale environment for sampling their wines. A small gift shop is available for browsing.

Four different Zinfandels are produced, each coming from specific vineyards within the Dry Creek and Alexander Valley Appellations. Their 2004 Quinn Vineyard Zinfandel is described as “raspberry jam aromas accented with spicy pepper that delight your senses, with a dense core composed of cassis and cacao with lush tannins.”

The winemaker, Antoine Favero, was born in the Champagne region of France, but ended up in Northern California after spending some of his youth in Peru. He believes wines are "nurtured" rather than produced. His resume includes work at Sebastiani, Gundlach-Bundschu, Bartholomew Park and Wilson Winery. He is currently overseeing the new winery building being constructed behind the tasting room.

Be sure to try the Zinfandel-filled chocolate or sample a cookie drizzled with their Chocolate Raspberry Cabernet Sauce. There is no food available, but you may bring in food and enjoy good Mazzocco wine in their picnic area.

I was never a Zinfindel fan until my daughter told me about this winery. I loved the wine so much I became a member! The staff is very friendly and even remember us when we come back. Additionally, once you are a member you get a discount at several of their family wineries, such as Wilson, Soda Rock and Matrix which also have really good wine.

We decided to turn up into the hills to find Ridge and Mazzocco, and came across Mazzocco first. This place has a great view of the local airport. You could almost fly in, stop by for a quick tasting, and then get in your plane again (though probably not advised). The tasting room was big and airy and had sliding glass doors that opened to the outside, which provided a nice breeze on a hot June day. We were the only ones in the tasting room and got to taste just about everything they had open. Their Cabs were very memorable and it was nice that you can only get the wines at the winery. Will definitely be back for the next event they have.

Stopped by during barrel tasting so it was a bit of a zoo. Nevertheless, we enjoyed having lunch out front and this is a very nice tasting atmosphere. We did purchase a case of their 08 Sonoma Zinfandel and are very happy wi the price vs.quality of this wine. There were several buses and limos there while we were here. Barrel tasting was in full swing.

We had some Mazzoco wine at a restaurant in Healdsburg and the waiter said the winery was worth the visit. It's kind of out in the country, but a nice modern space with a view. They have barbeques there too.
The wines are outstanding...the winemaker is Antoine ?, a really tall guy--funny and friendly.
We had a great time.
