The winery is owned by three local winegrowing families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms—who joined forces to pursue their mutual dream of crafting remarkable wines from their own vineyards in Paso Robles. Ancient Peaks Winery was established in 2005, and the first wines were released in the summer of 2007.
The name Ancient Peaks is a tribute to the geologic heritage of San Luis Obispo County, which is most evident in the rugged volcanic peaks that cast impressive shadows across the region. The ancient forces behind these peaks also gave rise to the fossilized soils and climate-shifting terrain that shape our wines.
Ancient Peak’s wines hail exclusively from four family-owned vineyards in Paso Robles, with the majority coming from Margarita Vineyard, the appellation’s southernmost boundary. This vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774.
Wines are crafted under the guidance of Director of Winemaking Mike Sinor, who is one of the Central Coast’s highest-rated winemakers. He does not rely heavily on fining and other cellar manipulations to achieve a desired outcome. Wines produced include Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The newly opened tasting room resides on the main drag in the old western town of Santa Margarita. The saloon-themed facade fits perfectly with the towns character and charm. Inside the cozy interior is a comfortable venue to taste the wine and experience the warm Ancient Peaks hospitality.
