As the story goes, Moonstone Cellars is a “hobby that got out of control,” per owner and winemaker Todd Clift. Todd and his dad began making wine in the basement of his previous residence located on Moonstone Beach in 1998. As his hobby blossomed into a career he decided that it was time to expand his operation outside of the home. Today you can find Todd’s wines at his coastal tasting room located in quaint downtown Cambria.
The tasting room is located just off Main Street, with plenty of quaint shops to enjoy as well as a plethora of dining options directly adjacent to the tasting room. Also, with its close proximity to the coast, you have the opportunity to enjoy a stroll on the beach, or have a bluff top picnic either before or after you visit the tasting room.
The tasting room is relaxed and welcoming and a u-shaped tasting bar begs you to come on in and enjoy one of many wines served at Moonstone Cellars. You will often find Todd himself at the tasting bar waiting to assist you and educate you about the wines that he produces and what food they might best be paired with. Todd’s wines are predominantly Bordeaux and Rhone varietals, and he also makes a white dessert wine that is predominantly made from Verdelho, a Portuguese grape. Be sure not to miss this wine, as you will find nothing else like it in California.
