About This Winery
Family Farmed and Organically Grown since 1970!
+ More
Guinness McFadden planted the first grapes in Mendocino County’s Potter Valley in 1970 and has grown organically from day one.
Today, McFadden Farm is a 500 acre biodiverse organic family farm with 200 acres dedicated to growing the county’s best grapes.
At the very north end of Potter Valley, tucked up against mountains, where the famed Russian River begins, McFadden Farm is a cool climate farm with a substantial temperature drop nightly. The result, for the grapes, is longer hang time leading to greater flavor development and gorgeous naturally integrated acid to provide balancing structure for those flavors.
In addition to the highest quality organic grapes farmed and sold to famed wineries like Robert Mondavi, Sterling, Dashe, and Chateau Montelena, McFadden Farm also grows organic grass fed beef cattle, herbs, beans, and more.
McFadden also makes their own limited production wine from their estate grown grapes and these wines go on to receive the highest awards: Double Gold medal and Best Of Class award from the 2013 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for Chardonnay and Riesling, and Double Gold from the 2012 Mendocino County Wine Competition for Sparkling Brut as an example.
Between the hydroelectric plant Guinness McFadden built and the over 300 solar panels he installed, McFadden Farm is far beyond carbon neutral producing enough energy to meet the needs of half of all residents and businesses in Potter Valley/
McFadden Farm is likely the greenest grower in the greenest county in America.
McFadden Farm is remote, the road turns to dirt and ends at the farm, no one visits because they are passing through. Once each year, on the second Saturday of July (July 13th in 2013), we open the farm up wide for our Wine Club Dinner at the Farm. About 225 guests come and enjoy our wines with a dinner of grilled meats and farm to table veggie dishes, salads, and desserts, followed by dancing under the stars, and around 100 folks set up tents and camp overnight, all on the bank of the Russian River.
To better meet the demand for McFadden wines and farm goods, the McFadden Farm Stand & Tasting Room retail shop was opened in downtown Hopland on Highway 101. Friends and fans visit daily to enjoy complimentary wine tasting, and to pick up wine to take home, as well as steaks and roasts from our freezer of organic grass fed beef, jars of organic and air dried (never irradiated) herbs and herb blends, braids of premium garlic, holiday herb wreaths, boxes of 100% pure wild rice, farm honey, olive oils and marinades, and more. People love visiting more than just a winery tasting room but a full fledged Farm Stand & Tasting Room.
With an entire wall of gifts, McFadden Farm Stand & Tasting Room is a shopaholic’s dream come true: wine themed accessories and decorations, kitchen goods, clothing, and the culinary pottery of artist Dick Lumaghi, our artist in residence, throwing, glazing, and firing his pottery at McFadden Farm.
Go for a free wine tasting. You may just find you want to support what they do, organic family farming, by buying some wine and other farm goods, or joining a wine club to save on every purchase including tickets to the Wine Club Dinner at the Farm in July.
