The Best Ramona Wineries
Why Visit Ramona's Wine Country
Ramona is a vibrant community just 28 miles North East of San Diego County. The town sits in the Santa Maria Valley and boasts some of the most impressive wines and wineries in the Southern California area. The vineyards are so special that the area received a designation as an America Viticultural Area in 2006. The Ramona Valley AVA is just the third "AVA" in Southern California. There are 60 vineyards and 30 Ramona wineries. Of the 30 wineries, 24 are currently open to the public for wine tasting.
The Ramona wineries are located between San Diego and the Temecula wineries further to the north. Unlike Temecula, the wineries in Ramona are generally newer and smaller in scale. You don't find the attached restaurants, hotels and concert venues at the Ramona wineries. Here, travelers can tour vineyards, taste wines made from many different varietals, and enjoy cascading views of the valley. The area is rural and the pace is slow. The perfect combination for a day of wine tasting!
The best Ramona wineries bring a mix of high-quality wines and a down-home feel. You will find none of the wine snobbery that is palpable in many of California's more established regions. In Ramona you will most likely taste wine with the winemaker, the winery owners or their close family. This makes for an educational experience rarely found in California.
Here are our favorite Ramona Wineries to visit. This list is just a starting point. We encourage you to explore Ramona's wine country and find the wineries that you love. Please visit our Facebook page and let us know which Ramona wineries you enjoyed!
Turtle Rock Ridge Vineyard Winery
This Ramona winery is an oasis for the wine lover. A beautiful setting where you can taste a variety of wines (both chilled and red wines) for just $15 or enjoy wine by the glass for $12.
The sangria, offered in red and white, is a guest favorite. Turtle Rock also treats guests to a complimentary winery tour, live music, and a dog-friendly environment. You can also bottle your own wine here. Some of the most popular wines include Hello Sunshine, a smooth a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, and Hello Gorgeous, their signature red blend.

Vineyard Grant James
We included Vineyard Grant James because they take Ramona wine tasting to another level. In addition to wine tasting, Grant James also entertains guests with wine and painting classes, exclusive dinners in the vineyard, cheese tastings from the cave, and Membership appreciation picnics for wine club members exclusively. Tastings at the winery are $10 and the fee is waived with the purchase of a bottle. Complimentary cheese and crackers and guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic. For those suffering from wanderlust, Grant James is also embarking on a river cruise via AMA Waterways to Bordeaux and other wine-soaked regions of France. The cruise features the wine of Grant James with the winemaker, Susanne Sapier. 25260 East Old Julian Highway, Ramona, CA 92065
Hatfield Creek Winery
The staff at Hatfield Creek Winery treats you like you are part of the family. Owners Debbie and Norm greet and pour guests some of their tastiest wines including bold reds and refreshing whites. The wine tasting is a flight of five wines for $10. The grounds are beautiful and feature a dining pavilion where guests can partake in a wine-pairing luncheon outdoors right in the middle of the vineyards. Yogis will love the meditation circle decorated with stones and bricks. You can even design one yourself. To memorialize a loved one, Hatfield Creek offers a program called Adopt-A-Vine where you will receive a name plaque in honor of your loved one. Every second Sunday Hatfield hosts a Sunset Supper with wine and food pairings. 1625 Highway 78, Ramona, CA 92065. 760-787-1102
Chuparosa Vineyards
The next winery is named for the hummingbird in Spanish - strong, confident, and flirtatious. The wines are 100% estate grown and feature some of the best Zinfandels in the region. The tastings are $10 per person for 5 wines. The Malbec and Sangiovese are among the reds you will get to try. The dry rosé is a detour from the mostly red wines they offer, but a definite guest favorite. The tasting room and winery are open on weekends where you can enjoy wine in their new tasting room building or on their breathtaking outdoor patio with views of the vines. 910 Gem Lane, Ramona, CA 92065. 760-788-0059
Principe di Tricase Winery
Visiting this Ramona winery is like visiting an Italian farm - cozy, welcoming, and very good wine. Wine lovers are treated to $5 and $10 tasting flights from Thursday thru Sunday, noon to sunset. The winery also moonlights as a Christmas Tree farm in the winter months. Their handcrafted, small-batch wines all made from the Italian varietals - Syrah, Viognier, Moscato, Fiano, and a dark rosé Aglianico. The wines are all Estate grown, including their popular red dessert wines. For the perfect day at Principe, bring a picnic lunch, listen to live music, and sip on wine flights. Alfredo and Alberto are great hosts and are very knowledgeable about the wines - so take advantage of the free mini-wine education during the tasting. Also, side note, the balsamic vinegar that is available to taste and purchase is very tasty. 18425 Highland Valley Road, Ramona, CA 92065. 760-315-8872
We hope you enjoyed our list of the best Ramona wineries to visit. Wine tasting in Ramona is a great side trip if you are already planning a visit to the Temecula wineries. It is also a quick, around one-hour, trip from San Diego. That's not much of an investment in time to enjoy the rural beauty of the Ramona vineyards and wineries.
