Located above San Pasqual Valley’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park, 5 miles east of Rancho Bernardo at Interstate 15 West Bernardo/Pomerado Offramp. Watch for the “Highland Valley Wine Country” sign.

The owners, Peter and Denise Clarke, originally tasted a Brunello red wine in Montalcino, Italy. After that visit, they were hooked and searched for a start in the wine-making business. They  planted 2,600 Brunello Sangiovese vines on their vineyard along with Barbera, Cabernet and Petite Sirah varieties.

The winery is Tuscan themed, with a lovely patio for guests to come sip delicious wine and enjoy the view of the vineyard and skyline. There are picnic sites available for guests to couple their meal with Altipiano’s wines and relax in the beautiful outdoors.  Five llamas also inhabit the vineyard as well as four friendly dogs, Poli, Roscoe,  Elsa and Bocilli, and two cats, Pops and Cali.  Altipiano is pet friendly.

Loved this place. I am glad I made the stop! I ended up picking up more than I planned(I bought more bottles here than any other vineyard on my trip). The owner's are fabulous people. I completed the tasting I was picking my selections. I asked," is the estate cab not on tasting list, better than the one I enjoyed?" The owner said "you be the judge" and opened a new bottle(the estate). I loved it. She also opened the estate Rose. On my next San Diego trip. I will return.

Sweet animals to visit on property and great picnic sites to enjoy a meal and a glass of wine. The Petite Sirah was excellent
