Why should you visit Aonair Wines?
Few places truly evoke the charm of wine quite the way that the half-stone and half-exposed wood structure of Aonair Winery does. This beautiful building is the property of Grant Long Jr. and his wife, Megan. Grant had been in the wine industry for years, dedicating himself to learning all the ins and outs of winemaking. Then, in 2015, he and his wife bought the Conn Valley property in Napa so he could use his knowledge to handcraft full-bodied wines from the grapes of Napa Valley. That is how Aonair Wines was born.
Grant and Meghan are all about making the best wines that they can, and there are limited quantities that they can make to their standards. These wines can only be bought through a club membership, either through the Portfolio Club or the Series Reserve Club. They are also very private about tastings, which you can only get if you contact them and make an appointment.
You will definitely be rewarded for making the appointment, though. You can count on a pleasant time tasting wines on their balcony, which is shaded by a wooden lattice roof. This keeps just enough of the glare off as you stretch out in stave-made Andiron chairs. And the view is spectacular: the winery is on a slope, and this affords you a magnificent view of oak trees, waves of grape vines, and the purple hills in the distance. If you would rather stay inside, there is a simple tasting room that looks like an airy and comfortable living room, complete with stone fireplace. You might even get a tour of the grounds on a 4-Wheeler.
Whether you sign up for their club or get a tasting appointment, you will have to admit that Grant’s approach to wine is a winner. Check them out should you be planning a visit to Napa.
