Why visit AXR Napa Valley Winery?

Two miles north of the city of St. Helena, in a tree-filled estate, sits the winery of AXR Napa Valley. This is where Jean Hoefliger, Kelly Trevethan, Mark Schratz, and Don Van Laeken pay homage to Napa’s winemaking past by using the 134-year old building. They even named their winery after the AxR rootstock that used to dominate California winemaking before the Phylloxera blight.

The front of the tasting room has a historic feel with its white clapboard front and rose bushes in front. The surrounding Redwood grove blocks out any modern view. It has the feel of pre-prohibition California and comes equipped with many stories from its pioneering past.

Once you are in the tasting room, you can hear all these stories while sitting in modern comfort. White and black wicker chairs contrast nicely with the brown tile floor and the vibrant red door and menus. This is what you’ll see if you get the AXR Tour and Tasting, which comes with the tour of the winery and a seated tasting of their current release red wines on their veranda or parlor.

You can also get the Vertical tasting that includes 5 vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon and the history of the V Madrone Vineyard, or you can take the Future of AXR Napa Valley tasting of barrel samples a Single Vineyard offering. Whichever tasting route you choose, be sure to call in advance for a reservation.
