A blend of natural beauty, brightly colored paintings and superb wines is what a stop at Carmody McKnight winery offers its visitors. Off the beaten track, this winery has an idyllic setting in the shade of giant oaks and adjacent to a lovely pond.
You pass the wooden gates and meander up a lane skirting an idyllic pond with giant mature oak trees and a lawn down to the waters edge. Heavy wooden tables and comfortable chairs are set up for picnics and placed in this gorgeous setting looking over the fountain and backed by the vineyard. Behind the winery building you might spy some horses and a pair of Alpacas lingering in their paddocks.
You walk down the path to the tasting room that once was the main house on the property. Inside is a tasting bar with logo clothes, award ribbons and bottles of wine. Further into the tasting room is an art gallery featuring local artists and the owners own brilliantly colored treasures. The wine labels also showcase his paintings with a new image for every new vintage.
The owners’ of this estate have their own story. Gary Conway is a successful film and TV actor (Burke’s Law among others) and also authored the book Art of the Vineyard. His name was changed from Carmody by Hollywood agents. The former Ms. McKnight, now Mrs. Conway, was crowned Miss South Carolina and later become Miss America.
The vineyard is an unusual combination of limestone, montmorillonite, and igneous (volcanic) rock and includes twenty-six soil types. The vineyard is so unique that it was chosen to be the subject of a long term testing and documentation with the Soil Information System from Earth Information Technologies. This program will help scientist with their study of soils types and uses in the viticulture industry.
Wines produced include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Chardonnay, a meritage and some late harvest offerings, plus a crisp sparkling wine.
