About This Winery
+ More
The Charles Krug Winery was established in 1861 and was the first winery in the Napa Valley. It has been owned and operated by the Peter Mondavi family since 1943. The winery focuses production on lush red Bordeaux-style blends, New Zealand-style Sauvignon Blanc, and classically crafted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.
Three generations of the Peter Mondavi family have been pioneers and innovators in the Napa Valley wine industry. Today the family continues its stewardship of 850 acres of estate land with organic and sustainable farming practices and state-of-the art winemaking techniques.
The tasting room is located on the original Charles Krug Estate Vineyards, between the vineyard and the wine cellar originally built by Charles Krug. The property is listed (Historic Landmark #563) on the National Register of Historic Places. The tasting counters are made from the family’s original redwood tanks. A good gift shop and nice picnic sites are also on the premises.
Adjacent to the tasting room, the historic Redwood Cellar and Carriage House are undergoing renovations. A total of 68 windows in the Redwood Cellar and 12 windows in the Carriage House will be restored, as well as the wooden floors and shutters, the rooftop belvedere and the winding spiral staircase.
