Why should you visit Contiuum Estate?
Pritchard Hill in Oakville had everything that Tim and Marcia Mondavi wanted in a wine estate. It had red volcanic soil high in iron. It sat on the east side of the valley and had a westerly aspect. The breathtaking view of the wooded hills around Oakville didn’t hurt, either. They hired Howard Backen to create a winery that matches the ground aesthetically and bring out the best in the grapes. That is how Continuum Estate was born.
And the Mondavis would know about making wine. Tim and Marcia are the fourth generation of Mondavis to make wine here in California. They are dedicated to the family art, and they create only one wine: a blend of Cabernet varietals that they grow on their estate. These special Bordeaux style wines sell out quickly, so becoming a wine club member is the best way to access them. This means trying to join the Continuum Estate mailing list. If you make the list, you will be notified when you can purchase an allocation of their wine.
You can only see the grounds if you make an appointment or are picking up a shipment of their masterpieces that you ordered. If you do get to go, you are in for a visual treat. They have a tasting room dominated by the graceful painting that Chiara Mondavi made called “Light of the Vine,” a silhouette of a grape vine in white against a gold background. The rest of the furnishings are elegant works of wood, including their oak bar. Sliding glass doors let you look out on the sloping vineyard and shale patio while you drink and eat some of the best grub around. There is even a chance to buy their estate olive oil.
