David Arthur Winery has been owned by the Long Family since the 1960’s. The family owned a butcher in Palo Alto, south of San Francisco. At the butcher shop, they were introduced to great wines and developed a passion for them. They decided to head north to Napa to find the best grapes to make wine.
The family ended up in St. Helena. St. Helena is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and Pritchard Hill is a big part of that beauty. On top of it sits a 1,000 acre vineyard and a wooden ranch-style house.
The feeling here is charming and home-like, with low stone walls separating the vineyards and a flagstone patio overlooking the vines and sweet hills. To get in, you pass the megalith sporting the David Arthur logo, which sits on the edge of the patio and stands sentinel over the rolling greenery. Once past that, everything is as cozy as possible. The cheerful tasting room is done in brick, and everyone can sit at the family-style table.
The winery focuses on Napa’s signature grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. You can try several Cabs and a few Bordeaux blends. There is a special cab called elevation 1147 that features the best of the best grapes from the family vineyards. This is a truly special experience. This is a dark and brooding wine with high tannins and a long finish.
The Long family is intent on giving the best possible impression of their winery, so you can only visit them if you make an appointment first. Then you can have a 60 to 90 minute tasting and tour. It’s worth the drive for the personal attention, the Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon, and the great views.
