Davis Bynum Winery takes you back in time to the very beginnings of winemaking in the Russian River Valley. Recognized as the first producer of a vineyard-designated Pinot Noir with a Russian River Valley Appellation, the family-operated winery continues to produce fine examples of Sonoma County wines using non-intervention winemaking techniques.
A rustic, old ivy-covered hop barn serves as the winery and tasting room at Davis Bynum. Overgrown trees and shrubs are threatening to take over the whole operation, but on a hot summer day they are much appreciated. The windowless tasting room has an underground-cellar-like atmosphere that is perfect for sampling their rich, fully expressive wines. The staff is entertaining and knowledgeable, and they love what they do.
Davis Bynum creates small lots of handmade, single-vineyard-designated and blended wines cultivated from a number of Russian River Valley vineyards. In addition to their five or six Pinot Noir wines, they also make Fume Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet, and a unique Malbec Port.
An emphasis on organic and biodynamic grape-growing practices has been employed here for many years. Using organic amendments and supplements – including compost, oyster shells, and ground lava – has contributed to the vineyard’s success. The results are full, sophisticated wines with deep flavors and soft, subtle tones.
