Field Recordings Winery

In urban Paso Robles, there is an equally urbane metal warehouse. If you approach the roll-top door, you’ll see the name emblazoned in black over the silhouette of a meadow. This is the Field Recordings winery tasting room. Inside is equally sophisticated, from their canned wines to their spacious tasting room.

Just like the unusual tasting room, Field Recording’s wines are cutting edge and loaded with personality. The grapes are grown in underappreciated or unknown vineyards on the Central Coast with names such as Jurassic Park. These small, sustainably managed spaces produce lush Pinot Noirs, coastal Chardonnay’s and crisp Chienan Blanc’s. Andrew Jones, the winemaker, uses his history as nursery fieldman to pick great vineyards and then make artisan wines, both single vineyard wines and innovative blends of varieties.

You need to schedule your tasting online or by phone. They will allow you to select the type of tasting you want. You can focus on all reds or all whites if you have a strong preference. You can even choose to taste on the can wines if you are feeling adventurous. The website interface for booking a tasting is clean and easy to use.

The winery tasting room is located within Tin City. This is a grouping of smaller producers that have taken up residence in an industrial park on the outskirts of Paso Robles. When you are planning your visit to Field Recordings, you should book tastings at a few of the other Tin City tasting rooms. You can easily walk between the tasting rooms there. There is also a brewery and a distillery if you need a little break from wine.
