In 1982 the Ferrer family of Spain, proprietors of the world’s largest producer of sparkling wine — Freixenet U.S.A.– purchased 250 acres of land in Sonoma’s Carneros wine district; they then planted vineyards with the traditional sparkling wine grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1986, the winery was built, with its Spanish-style architecture and breathtaking hillside location. The winery was named after José Ferrer’s beloved wife Gloria.
The extensive winery operation is well off the highway, nestled into the hillside. Four flagpoles, numerous olive trees and stairs mark the entrance to the hospitality center. Inside is a spacious entry with tile floors, heavy wood-beamed ceilings and arched windows looking out to their “Vista Terrace”. The room has tapestries and antiques, a warm inviting fireplace, an extensive gift area and comfortable tables and chairs for relaxing. A long tasting bar hosts visitors, while table service, both inside and out, is also available. The place has a very sociable and stylish ambiance and is a great place to taste sparkling wines, perhaps accompanied by their Catalan tapas of roasted and spiced almonds.
Six different sparkling wines are produced using the time-honored, labor-intensive, méthode champagne. Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay and Syrah are their still-wine offerings. Also available are a number of unique vineyard-designated wines created from specific Pinot Noir vineyard blocks. The winery has regularly scheduled tours at 11am, 1pm and 3 pm (be sure to call first.) VIP tasting and tour programs can be arranged.
