Hill Family Estate

Once you pass the burgundy and white striped awning of the Hill Family Estate Tasting Room in Downtown Yountville, you are in the Hill family’s private dream. Doug Hill spent 3 decades growing grapes; he finally just wanted to share the wine-making joy with his family, so he went into business for himself. He makes the wines, his son sells them, his wife tends the grounds, his daughter’s host tastings, and his dog brings his unique vision to the business.

The tasting room shows the outlook this brings, as there is a little bit for everyone. On the walls, a Fender guitar and a surfboard beckon the sporty, and antiques please the eye of the connoisseur. It is refined and relaxed at once, and everyone will feel at home there.

For those who want to get back to the farm, the Hill Family Estate hosts Secret Garden Tours. You can explore their 1.3-acre farm, with it Free-range snails and 120 kinds of fruit trees. You will sample exotic fruit, such as white strawberries and pineapple guava blossoms. These fruit and snails go to the French Laundry: every nibble in their garden is a luxury.

When you visit the winery, see if you can get your hands on a bottle of “Origin”. This was the name of the first wine they released in 2001. They have released subsequent vintages and you may be able to get a bottle or two to take home. They offer a nice range of varietals and blends. If you have had your fill of Cabernet Sauvignon for the day, you can find Pinot, Syrah and some nice blends at this winery. Enjoy!
