Jonata Winery is a living memorial to the past. It was named after the 1845 Spanish land grant, and it occupies what was the center of the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata. Its name means ‘live oak,’ and the sandy soil there grows some majestic specimens of that tree. The winery nestles in the Santa Rita Hills like a jewel in a golden bough.
You’ll see the elegant wooden ranch house and immediately think of sage grass and stage coaches. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable, yet refined bar. Charcoal prints line the walls and the bar is white marble. It’s a fine place to sample their fruity wines.
Not only is the house pleasant, but the grounds are an invitation to let your modern cares slip away. They have a beautiful lake and a ton of outdoor seating to enjoy the rolling hills from. You can even play horseshoes in between wine sampling. These 600 acres of vineyards produce solid wines that the Jonata staff labors to keep up to a traditionally high bar. Their wines score high for quality, and, while they tend to be pricey, wines such as their 2008 La Flor de Jonata are worth it.
Jonata is a Central Coast project from the group that owns Screaming Eagle winery. Screaming Eagle is one of the Napa cult wines that commands hundreds of dollars per bottle for their wine. Jonata is a much more wallet friendly option for wine lovers that want to get a sense of what Screaming Eagle is all about. The wines of Jonata are made from grapes sources in the Ballard Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara.
