Why visit Kamen Estate Wines?

In the rugged hillsides of the Southern Mayacamas Mountains, there is a tract of 280 acres overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Rows of premium Cabernet Sauvignon flow over the hills and in a swath around a white Mission style winery. This is owned by Robert Mark Kamen, a man who fell in love with it while celebrating the sale of his first screen play back in 1980. He started making his own wines from these grapes in 1999 after a fire destroyed much of his crops. He’s an optimistic guy who lives by his intuition, assuming that everything happens for a reason, and the grapes have rewarded his outlook.

Nowhere does this zeal and optimism shine more than in his Kamen Estate Wines tasting room. Sitting on the picturesque Sonoma Plaza, it sports a white marble bar and modern posters on the wall. They pour 2 flights here: a Signature Flight for people who want to try the varietals and the Premier Flight for red lovers.

But if you prefer to see where the magic all started, you will want to make a reservation for a tour of the vineyard. The tour includes a flight of four wines and artisanal cheeses. You do have to call 48 hours in advance to book a tour of the Kamen Winery, but you will find the views of the Mayacamas and the bay, not to mention the delicious cheeses, worth the effort of planning.

Robert Kamen is still writing screen plays and cheerfully assuming everything happens for a reason after 20 years of owning Kamen Estate Wines. The best way to sample of his spirit is to visit his tasting room or vineyards. Come and experience it for yourself next time that you are in Sonoma.
