Four miles north of Highway 46 East sits the winery and tasting room of Le Vigne Winery. You pass by flower beds, a flag pole and an old wagon filled with wine barrels as you make your way to the front of the Mediterranean tiled roof building. Large 20,000 gallon stainless steel fermentation tanks stand adjacent to the entrance to the tasting room.
Inside is a large bright and airy tasting room and gift shop. Tile floors support tables full of wine related merchandise including pesto sauces, olive oils, pastas, hand painted stemware, and logo clothing. There is a deli case with over 25 varieties of cheeses, plus pate, smoked salmon, meats, and other gourmet items. In addition to growing grapes on the property there are 100 acres of Pistachios which are available in the tasting room.
The vineyard was planted in 1982 and soon was supplying grapes to local vintners. In 1990 they produced their first vintage under the Sylvester label, and then in 1995 they built their state of the art winery. Now it is owned by the Filippini family and redubbed Le Vigne Winery. The facility is overbuilt for their production as they also custom crush for other labels in the area that do not own their own equipment. They produce a range of easily approachable value priced wines including traditional Bordeaux and Rhone varietals as well as reserve lots, dessert wines, a sparkling wine, and ports, which are created in smaller quantities and usually sold exclusively through the tasting room and online.
Be sure to take an extra few minutes to walk back under the grape arbor to the back of the property and explore the classic railcars on display, including two vintage Pullman sleepers and a dining car. They are a bit worn but worth the visit, especially the Grand Salon Observation Deck car with its chandelier, comfy chairs and wrap-around windows. Bring your lunch and sit a spell.
