Why should you visit Littorai?
In 2003, Heidi and Ted Lemon picked a 30-acre patch of Sebastopol because they wanted to live out Rudolf Steiner’s vision of a fully integrated farm. They built a low-slung environmentally-friendly winery and sowed legumes, grains, and grasses. They devoted themselves to using sustainable methods and following the teachings of biodynamic farming. It isn’t a surprise that this pastoral idyll won the Environmental Stewardship Award in 2015.
The Lemons are proud of their terroir at Littorai and they have 2 ways of showing it off. They offer a “Single Vineyard Tasting”. This tasting focuses on a selection of Vineyard Designated releases. Here they give you 45 minutes to savor the nuances that each terroir brings to wine while admiring their granite-topped tables. You have to make an appointment between Monday and Saturday, but it is well-worth it for their help in pinpointing the difference between Sonoma Coast wines and Anderson Valley wines. No enthusiast should pass up this fine education.
If you want to learn more about their farm and the intricacies of Pivot Estate Vineyard, you will want to sign up for “The Gold Ridge Estate Tour and Tasting”. The host takes an hour and a half to walk you through the basics of biodynamic farming. They also cover other important aspects of the Littorai business. You will get to enjoy the clucking of Free Range chickens, the scent of lavender, and all natural hay during the tour. You will then top off the tour with a sampling of Littorai’s classic wines.
Out of their 14 acres at Littorai, 8 acres are dedicated to growing evergreen and oak dotted grasslands. The Lemons set out to show the world that wine growing can bring you in harmony with the Earth. They have succeeded and, whether you are taking the tour or sampling the wine, we think you will find this harmony as pleasing to the soul as it is the palate.
