Peay Vineyards

The Sonoma Coast holds many gems, and one of them is Peay Vineyards. This collaboration between Vanessa Wong and Nick and Andy Peay is a place devoted to making great wines and nothing but great wines. They picked a spot on the foggy hills just above where the coldest air moves. It’s an uplifted sea bed that is still dotted with nautilus fossils from 7 million years ago. The ground is made of fine sandy loam that old forest compost has rendered nearly pH neutrality. You would find the vines on shoot-positioned trellises that let the sun warm them against the cool breezes. The grapes that come in are small and intensely flavored, firm and healthy. All this meticulous attention to the terroir and the latest scientific thought on wine production pays off in the end, with amazing Syrahs and an expressive Pinot Noir. You will find their wine catalogue full of complex, restrained wines a joy to experience.

If you want to see the Peay Vineyards, you can attend their Open House on the Saturday in spring that they pull corks. Otherwise, you must be on their mailing list and buy from that list. “With minor exceptions, all wines are made from grapes grown on our 51-acre hilltop vineyard located above a river in the far northwestern corner of the West Sonoma Coast,
4 miles from the Pacific Ocean at Sea Ranch.”

“We grow 34 acres of Pinot noir (4 Pinots: Scallop Shelf, Pomarium, Ama, Sonoma Coast), 8 acres of Syrah (2 Syrah: Les Titans, La Bruma), 7 acres of Chardonnay (2 Chardonnay:
Estate, Sonoma Coast), 1.8 acres of Viognier (Estate), 0.4 acres of Roussanne and 0.2 acres
of Marsanne (Estate blend)”
