+ More
Pozo Valley is a boutique winery owned and operated by the Arnold family with a tasting room located near Santa Margarita and 18 miles south of Paso Robles. The winery offers some very good red wines in an off the beaten track location with plenty of country charm.
Located in downtown Santa Margarita, the tasting room is just one stop in a morning of checking out this quaint little town. In addition to the tasting, there are some very nice gifts and food selections, managed by a catering partner.
Listening to the history of the ranch and grape growing in the area makes for a fun way to work your way through their tasting list. The Cabernet Sauvignon is especially nice. They have an outdoor patio in the back with tables for a picnic and there is a nursery next door for those more inclined to check out local plants, while others in the party do the tasting.
The Arnold family first settled in the Pozo Valley in 1919, when Thomas and Josephine Arnold sold their farm in Nebraska and moved out west. For five generations members of the Arnold family have lived and worked on the original ranch land, raising beef cattle and farming a variety of crops. The vines were planted in 1995 with the help of family and friends and in 2003 the Arnolds decided to make their own wines for commercial release.
The valley maintains a Coastal influence evidenced by the fog that can often be seen creeping through the mountain passes. The extreme fluctuation in daily temperature during the growing season has proven to be an ideal climate for growing flavorful varietals including, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. They also produce a Viognier and a late harvest dessert wine.
