Four miles down a long narrow farm road, past row crops and fruit trees, lies the reward of the charming and relaxed Rancho Sisquoc Winery. The historic San Ramon Chapel (State Historical Landmark #877) overlooks the entrance to the ranch, and is the subject artwork on all the wine labels.
Originally an 1852 Mexican land grant, the ranch has provided fruit for many wineries in the state. In 1972 the winery pressed its first harvest, and was one of only a handful of winemaking operations in the region at the time. Originally known for its rich Cabernet Sauvignon and sweet Riesling, the winery has added Chardonnay, Sylvaner, Merlot, Sangiovese and Bordeaux blends.
As you pull up to the cluster of buildings under the sycamore and oak trees, the aged wooden deck and rustic tasting room transports you back in time. In the Chumash language Sisquoc means “Gathering Place,” and the grounds of the winery are just that. The farmhouse and barn date from the early 1900s, and artifacts of an earlier age lend the ranch a feeling of a time when the pace was slow and unhurried.
Inside the cozy tasting room the tasting staff pours wines and answers questions about the building’s history and early winemaking in the area. A large antique ice box with wooden doors and brass handles sits in the corner, keeping food items cool. Picnic tables, a grassy lawn and a covered deck are available for lounging.
