Along the back roads east of Paso Robles seek out the winery estate of Sculpterra to experience a one of a kind wine tasting experience. In addition to a fine portfolio of wines to taste you cannot miss the dramatic bronze and granite sculptures from artist John Jagger that adorn the property.
As you arrive at the estate you are greeted by a 14 feet tall, 17,000 pound cat. This magnificent entry sculpture, adorned with bronze whiskers and bronze claws, is one of a dozen artistic pieces that prowl the property. There is a magical dancing horse, a 16,000 pound mammoth, a prowling 15 foot puma and a 11 foot tarpin.
Inside is a showplace with heavy wood beamed ceilings, rock walls, art pieces and lovely details and finishes. Unique quality gift items are for sale as well as cookbooks, miniature sculptures, and kitchen and dining accessories. Picnic essentials are also available.
A long concrete tasting counter serves up wines grown from the estate vineyard. The wines are made using traditional gravity methods ensuring that the integrity of the wines stay intact. Wines are aged an average of 12 to 18 months in American, French and Hungarian oak. Make sure to try their estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Frankel family first planted pistachios’ on the ranch, followed by 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. After initial success with both plantings, Dr. Frankel expanded the vineyard operation in 1997 with additional Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Zinfandel and 10 acres of Merlot. Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre, Petite Sirah and Viognier are the most recent additions to the vineyard. Son Paul Frankel is the winemaker.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Sculpterra wine are donated to “His Healing Hands”, a medical missionary foundation that sends medical missionary teams on short-term trips all over the world to care for the most needy under-privileged peoples on all five continents.
