+ More
The Mead Kitchen is a brand new meadery based out of Berkeley, currently making mead at Urbano Cellars. If you’re unfamiliar with mead, it is the oldest alcoholic beverage known to mankind, pre-dating both beer and wine. Mead is quite simply honey-wine, or wine made from honey, and it’s naturally gluten-free! In its simplest form, making mead requires honey, water, yeast, and nothing more.
The Mead Kitchen currently offers three different flavored meads: Orange-Ginger, Simcoe (hops), and Cherry. We source all our ingredients locally, both the fruit and the honey. The Mead Kitchen is on tap at select bars throughout the Bay Area, including: East Bay Spice Co., Albany Taproom, Lanesplitters Pizza, and Zeitgeist.
The Mead Kitchen is based in Berkeley, CA and was founded in early 2013, though Mead Maker Dan Cook has been making mead for well over 15 years. During that time, over a hundred different recipes were tested and refined to develop the mead we offer today.
Early on in the licensing process, we were introduced to Urbano Cellars in Berkeley, where we currently make all of our mead. Urbano Cellars has proven integral in helping us get the Mead Kitchen up and running.
