Italian winemaker Vittorio Sattui arrived in San Francisco in 1882. He first worked as a baker, and then later started a boarding house in North Beach, where he made wine for his guests. By 1885, the reputation of Vittorio’s wines allowed him to quit the bakery and devote himself full time to winemaking. He established St. Helena Wine Cellars, taking the name of the small, bucolic Napa Valley town were he obtained his grapes, later changing the name to V. Sattui Winery.

In 1920, Prohibition devastated almost all California wineries, including V. Sattui. It was not until the late 1970s that Vittorio’s great-grandson, Daryl, would reestablish the operation, building a beautiful stone winery on land in the center of Napa Valley. Its two-story building, tower, wine caves and underground aging cellars and museum are a treat to explore on their self-guided tours.

The old vine-covered winery building is now home to their extensive deli, gift shop and tasting room. Hundreds of gourmet items, exotic cheeses, oils, salads, lunch supplies and sandwiches are available in the busy shop. The large tasting room has two long tasting counters and numerous wine and gift displays. They offer complimentary tasting, with a $5 fee for reserve wines. There are acres of grass beneath giant oaks available for picnicking and general lounging-around.

The winery produces dozens of wines, including the traditional California varietals, roses, dessert wines and sparkling wines. Italian-style wines include Sangiovese, proprietary blends and even a heady Grappa. Wines are available only at the winery.

Please note- this review is based on the CELLAR tasting room (the regular public tasting room is often crowded and does not provide good wine selection)

We got a free trip to the cellar because a rude employee complained quite openly about "why would people ever bring children to a winery?" Meanwhile, my brother-in-law was outside, entertaining my then-2 year old daughter. Wow- rude! However, after our trip to the cellar, we were hooked, and even became club members so we could go back! The cellar is comfortable, roomy, and usually not very crowded. The best employees work down there- very knowledgable and polite. We are able to try a great variety of wines, too. There was one day I sampled almost every Zinfandel on the menu- it was amazing! Also, downstairs, there is plenty of room for my daughter to sit and read or color, while we taste. We always need to allow an hour or more for our visit here, and we hit it up every time we visit the valley. They MORE than made up for that little debacle

We had a lot of fun here and tasted a lot of different wines. There is a great deli here and a park like place to have lunch. We wandered around the old winery which was cool. The place got crowded so we moved on but a great place for wine and food.

We visited early in the day, right when they opened. Tasting room was still pretty empty so it was great. The young lady we had was very knowledgeable and we found a great Gamy Rouge that we loved and purchased. We also purchased a Port for a friend of ours. The deli is amazing but if you want a sanwich any different then how it is already made you are out of luck. We purchased some cheese and bread and took it with us for the rest of our trip. As we were leaving the tour busses started rolling in and we were glad we missed them.

The winery opens early and if you want to beat the crowds be there early on. Ben was helping us and he showed good knowledge and was very helpful. The grounds here, as in most Napa Wineries are manicured to perfection. We felt that the Cab and Pinot were the best value. The wines all were well made. This winery has the largest selection of food and a nice picnic area to enjoy it. Although now that we have seen it I would not stop here again. You should stop once just to browse the winery.

with the deli V. Sattui is the place to stop for lunch on the wine tour in Napa. Ok wines all around except for the Madiera which is superb. we always keep 3-4 bottles in stock

This is a big stop for large tourist groups and is a mainstay in the Napa scene. They've been around for quite some time and make a very large assortment of wines. The wines were much better than I expected, but the place was packed with tourists who weren't always the nicest people. However, the deli is one of the best things, and I always stop there when in Napa. The cheese and cured meat section is amazing. You can buy a bottle of wine, pick up a baguette and some other food and have a picnic at their tables outside--an afternoon well spent.

I was just in Napa for 11 days with my husband and we visited 38 wineries. This is the only one we did not like. The wines were weak bodied and not interesting. We visited on a Thursday and the place was packed. The person doing our tasting was very overworked, distracted and kept getting confused. We had planned to buy picnic items and wine and stay on the grounds for lunch but after the tasting experience decided to head for a restaurant. Sorry, I just would not recommend and would not go back.
