Just off Templeton Road you drive up the gravel path to the red-tiled winery and tasting room. A grape arbor leads past tables and umbrellas for picnicking or just lazing in the sun. Inside the cozy tasting room is a fireplace along with logo clothes and some sweet chocolates. The tasting bar staff encourages you to be adventurous in your tasting selections.
Wines are produced from their estate grapes as well as from other sources. They purchase grapes from some 40 different vineyards in the area and in one season has crushed more than 30 different varieties of grapes. The “four horseman” are Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay which account for 65% of their production. Their founder, Ken Volk, has encouraged his team to experiment with new varieties and wine making techniques. This has led to a program of small lot experimentation and the production of a number of rare varieties such as Malvasia Bianca, Verdelho and Blaufrankisch, Negrette, Tempranillo and others. These wines are frequently available only in the tasting room.
The reserve wine program includes the Cheval Sauvage (French for Wild Horse) line of superior vintages.

Wild Horse is a large producer, but their tasting room offers far more than the standard varietals they sell in large quantities. The Reserve list offers some very nice choices, so we decided to go for that taste, it is $10/head but Shawn gave us a great tasting by comparing some of the standard taste wines with the reserves. Like many of the Central Coast wineries, Shawn is a Cal Poly student in the wine program so he really knows his stuff. Recommend the Negrette, Blaufrankisch and Unbridled Zinfandel. Only negative was the acoustics in the tasting room, so if there is a large group in there, enjoy their outside seating for a few minutes. We got there just as another group was leaving so it was very nice.

The tasting room is a little small, and this place gets crowded. But the wine is really great and well priced.

They have very unique varietals that I have not found at any other wineries, such as Blaufrankisch, Malvasia Blanca, Negrette, Tempranillo, Dolcetto. These are produced in limited quantity, so if you find one you like you better buy it now, because it won't be there in a couple months. This is probably one of the top five popular in the whole region and regularly wins best of the region award. Go during harvest festival for a really great time.
