Colgin Cellars
The northern end of IX Estate in the Pritchard Hill area is a prime wine grape growing spot. Lake Hennessey sits far below, and the secluded hilltop provides a beautiful view of it. Here, the winery marries the Mediterranean villa with a gravity fed, cutting-edge wine-making technology. The winery gets fruit Tychson Hill and Cariad vineyards as well as IX Estate, and these microclimates produce Cabernet Sauvignons with a rabid following. These vineyards are protected from mid-day heat and grow in unique volcanic soil, perfect for the small-berried clones that Colgin favors.
You can’t visit the winery; it is closed to the public. The estate, however, is available for visiting if you are a member of the wine club. The proprietor, Ann Colgin, has an art background, and she uses it to hang art about winemaking throughout, and you may see it if you get a tour of her refurbished home and Tychson Hill. If you are not a member, you will simply have to content yourself with a bottle of her wine. In operation since 1992, her estate has won 9 100-point scores from Robert Parker since 2002. If you really want to taste Colgin at its best, its signature wine is IX Estate Red Wine. The other wines are Bordeaux blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines come out vibrant, firmly structured and full of earth and floral notes. It isn’t too surprising that Colgin is a cult favorite in wine circles.
Colgin in on the list of the most expensive California wines. You must join their mailing list to get an allocation or offering. If you don’t purchase two of their offerings in a row, you will be removed from the list.
Colgin Cellars also has their own brand of perfume. It all fits into the luxury vibe you find around Colgin.
