Why visit the Deerfield Ranch Winery?

Kenwood and its environs are breathtakingly beautiful, and Robert and PJ Rex do their utmost to preserve it. Their winery, Deerfield Ranch winery is certified organic and extensive parts of the 41-acres of the winery lands are wetlands and forest. This leaves beautiful ponds and lush grasses everywhere. The addition of metal giraffe statues makes this fantastic viewing experience complete.

Visiting the buildings is a treat, too. Michael Rex, Robert’s brother, designed the ‘barn’ style winery and is working on a new 45,000 case gravity flow winery. His architectural gifts, however, really shine in the tasting room.

Their tasting room is deep in their wine cave, which is both the literal and metaphorical heart of their production facility. The cave is shaped like a wine glass, and you enter the ‘stem’ through Redwood doors. You walk up the stem, past wine barrels galore, and then you step into the vibrant, all-important Grand Room. The room is indeed grand, with over-stuffed couches to lounge in and small tables to invite your friends too. The tall arched ceiling, pleasant watercolor landscapes, and stucco walls keep the intimate cave feeling alive and well.

In fact, the artwork is specially made for the winery by Fred Parker, an artist who works less than a mile away from it. It was his painting of Sonoma Mountain that inspired the Deerfield Ranch logo, and they have shown their thanks by selling his paintings on the winery’s website.
