Why visit Shale Canyon Wines?
Do you like wines that reflect the character of only one vineyard at a time? How about handcrafted Syrah, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel? You can find them all at Shale Canyon Wines.
So how did Shale Canyon Wines get started? The Prader family joined forces with winemaker Ken Gallegos in 2007 to make small lots of just that sort of wine. The Prader brothers are part of a family with a long history in the Monterey area. Ken was a friend who they turned to when they decided to turn their property into vineyards and make wine. The vineyards that they source their grapes from are in the Arroyo Seco AVA, including their own, a small plot that snuggles in the warm embrace of the Arroyo Seco Canyon, behind Sycamore Flats. They liked this place for the rocky outcroppings and warm climate for grape growing. They did have to bring in a well to make it work. They produce only 2,500 to 4,000 cases per year in the little red ranch on their vineyard, but they emphasize quality above all else.
You can experience this emphasis in very comfortable surroundings if you come to the tasting room that they share with Blair Wine. Located in Carmel’s shopping district, it provides a shady patio and an airy room for relaxing out of the Californian heat, pleasant landscape paintings for admiring while you sip your wine, and a bar top made of corks for delighting in before you get your flight.
If single vineyard wines of great quality are your thing, Shale Canyon Wines will be your thing, too, so come visit whenever you are in Carmel.
